Game: Interview

Just for a bit of fun, let's have a game.

Here's the rules. You answer the three questions in the post above yours, and then ask three different questions. The next person comes along, answers your questions and posts three of their own. Lets see how far it can go.

So, to start off:

1. What is your middle name, and do you love it or loathe it?

2. If you were stuck on a deserted island, with plenty of food and water and stuff to survive, what would be the one luxury you would ...

Just some random thoughts and rambling.......

My period has just returned. It's making me feel really positive because now I know I can take my fertility into my own hands again. I realise now that I was feeling like I would never have another baby, and I felt hideously infertile because of losing James.

His due date has been and gone. It was a really hard week. But now it's over it's like a small weight has lifted off my shoulders. I know that having another baby will never take away ...

What did YOU do wrong to cause your traumatic experience, what did the hospital do wrong?

The first time I'm going to put the blame squarely on the hospital. I was 19, and I thought I could trust them because they crapped on about being the best maternity unit in this hemisphere. They coersed me into every procedure I knew was bad for me and my baby by saying I was putting her at risk. I knew THEY were putting her at risk, but I was young and confused by the contradictions I guess.

The ...

making revolution on our own behalf

I was reading a book last night which is about the feminist journey of a woman in the US. She said a lot of things which, unsurprisingly, resonated with me, particularly around women's refusal to support their own human rights movement (while being heavily invested in many other human rights struggles!) and the complicated issues behind that. Some quotes seemed pertinent to me. I hope they provoke some thought and some revolution on behalf of ourselves and our sisters in you. The lack of response ...

Men and Birth Trauma

A few days ago Dan had the opportunity to open up about what the birth was like for him, how he felt and how he feels about it now.

I think it's fairly common knowledge around here that men can suffer from PTSD after a birth.

But I'm wondering, is it possible for the man (or the non-birthing woman, or support person or whatever) but not the woman to have PTSD after birthing?

I'm looking forward to an interesting discussion here.

From reading posts on this and other forums, and also in the media, it appears to me that the concept of 'feminism' is one that is often confused, misjudged and corrupted.

I would like to invite Heket to give us a run down on feminism, and let's talk about what it means to all of us.

14th october 2007 saw me in labour with my fourth child. Nothing major, a few twinges at 8pm so off i went to bed to get some rest. By 11 pm i couldn't sleep through them, so decided to get up and walk around a bit to see if i'd go into active labour. by midnight i was holding on to the wall with every second contraction. my natural rythym seems to be one long peaking contraction, small break, one short breathing contraction.

Today I finally had the chance to watch The Business of Being Born a film by Abby Epstein and Ricki Lake about birthing practices in America and the increasing use of interventions in birth (and what that means for mother, baby and society).

One topic that really made me think, that I hadn't considered before, was the increasing acceptance of medical intervention to 'fix' undesirable parts of ourselves.

There are a number of ways your baby can be positioned (known as "presentations") in the womb.

Your baby may be bottom up (vertex) or bottom down (breech).

Above: A baby in the vertex position. Most babies will be in this position at the start of labour.

Above: A baby in the breech position.
I was interested to know how those of you that have had caesareans feel about your scar.

I kind of like mine. I don't like that it has to be there in the first place, but it's a part of my body that has a lot of symbolism. In that, I cherish it and nurture it as a symbol of a couple of facets of my personality: the ability to draw inner strength and get through ordeals, and the part of me that is healing, or vulnerable, or the part of me that needs love.

I rub rosehip oil into it ...

I think it's something ongoing, and that we never know what will set off our pain or ptsd.

Just an example : I was fine for several years, but on my babies 10th b'day I was set off again by someone reminding me about how she had met my baby before I had (I posted about it here, I dont need to recap). That set off all sorts of things in me that I hadn't revisited in years!!! Granted I had covered lots of ground and was able to face ...

I hope they can be useful for others.

I express love and joy easily, I am at peace.

I am free to circulate love and joy in every part of my world.
