With these new laws set to stamp out homebirth soon (and lets face it, homebirth will always happen but ....) I suggest that everyone meet a midwife NOW! Even if you're not pregnant, even if you're not planning a baby for a few years, even if you've had your last baby already! Meet a midwife! That way if things change, you find out you're pregnant etc etc, you already know a midwife and can just call her up and hire her.

These laws are nothing short of blatant misogyny, lets beat them to ...

Please send the following template email (or even better, one of your own) to GetUp! at campaigns@getup.org.au

Dear GetUp!

I am writing to ask for GetUp's help. The government has passed a draft legislation that will effectively make homebirth illegal in Australia by July 2010. This removes women's right to choose how and where to birth their babies and forces women into a hospital or to freebirth at home with no trained support.

We want to highlight the absolute injustice of this ...

This week Federal Health Minister has introduced two bills into parliament that will effectively make homebirths attended by a qualified independant midwive illegal from July 2010 onwards.

This is a highly distressing and injust development in the Maternity Services Review, and the formation of a national registration register for health care professionals.

Why injust? These legislative changes challenge a woman's right to choose what she feels is best for her baby and herself. For ...

Homebirth Australia today slammed the exclusion of homebirth from insurance

Credits to Hayley from Alternative Baby for the following:

As you may know, Australia is moving from state-run registration boards for health professionals (doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, etc) to a single national registration board and requiring professional indemnity insurance to register. This is due to come into effect as of July 2010.

While there are some positive aspects to a single national registration board there is a glaring problem with this legislation.

Hospital birth must once again be considered the radical alternative to a planned homebirth. If women still insist on having hospital births, they must consider having experienced labor support people, such as strong doulas, with them at all times- to vociferously and passionately "guard the normal". Homebirth is the obvious way to avoid unnecessary interventions altogether. Midwives have the potential to be our greatest allies in this; but they, too, must resist the temptation to try ...

Introduction

It is stated in the discussion paper “Improving Maternity Services in Australia” that Australia is one of the safest countries in the world to give birth, for both maternal and infant survival rates .

This is a fantastic record and one that many women are reassured by and grateful of.

Given this standing as a strong foundation, there are many calling for reforms ...

One thing that occurred in 1916 was the famous "ONCE A C/SEC, ALWAYS A C/SEC" statement was made by an ob. His speech was basically saying how we needed to avoid c/secs because sometimes further surgery becomes necessary. He also included a few examples where womyn had gone on to birth perfecty however.
