I am doing a holistic birth preparation course as part of my professional development at the moment (and I highly recommend this course- run by Childbirth Educator Penny Burrows- if anyone is in the Bellingen area and would like more information, PM me).

According to the course, the four most important factors in acheiving a natural birth- that is, one without any medical intervention- are:

1. Choice of care provider

Who is your care provider, and were you able to choose them? ...

Connection to our bodies in birth, and in life

How connected do you feel to your body?

As a counsellor, a pattern I witness in many people is that we live very much "in our heads" the vast majority of the time. What I mean by this is that we give an inproportionate amount of time and energy to our thoughts, our worries, our judgements and our mental shopping list and what time we were meant to pick up the dry cleaning and how much money should be left in the bank account to pay for x, y and z...and so on.

Social Support and Birth Study in the UK

We are carrying out research looking at the effects of social support on experiences of childbirth.

The study will ask questions about you and then present a story of a birth experience. Afterwards you will be asked to consider how you would feel if you went through that type of experience.

The findings from this study will help us understand how different types of support during birth may affect women's feelings of control and emotions during and after childbirth.

birthing doll

So, a lovely person I know suggested I make a birth doll for my toddler--you know, the kind where the baby comes out of the mum's vagina & can 'breastfeed'. The ones I have seen for sale seem to be knitted or crotcheted, though, and I'm just not that clever with needles. So I've been mulling around in my head how best to do it. I think I will make a standard stuffed kind of doll, but I want to make it as realistic as possible, and I'm on a quest for information. I think I'll make it ...

My4girls became My5girls this morning, at 8.43am. J was born via caesarean weighing 2.8kg, 48 cm long with a head of lustrous dark hair!

Both mother and baby are doing well, My4girls was able to have skin on skin contact and establish breast feeding whilst still in theatre and then recovery. J was not cleaned of vernex. Both of these things were very important to My4girls, and apparently skin in skin with baby in theatre is now protocol for women undergoing caesareans via epidural and spinal ...

Has anyone made a birth plan that includes the possibility of caesarean, or a birth plan for a planned caesarean?

I have a friend who is facing a caesarean for genuinely medical reasons (I won't disclose more than that as I don't want this thread to be about whether or not caesar is the right option). She feels, after 4 caesareans, that she has really missed out on a beautiful feminine experience in vaginal birth, and is looking for ways to make her upcoming caesarean a more personal, positive ...
