Taken from "Mothering the New Mother", by Sally Placksin:

Some Mother Centred Needs you might have (or father centred, as the case may be ):

The need for someone to talk to- a good role model and listener

The need to focus inward

The need to feel dependant

The need to feel mothered

The need to talk about the labour and delivery

The need to feel protected

The need to feel nurtured

The need to respect your own vulnerability

The need for private time

I would like us to share experiences for a little while.

It's often said that the bonding in the first few hours of birth strongly affects the mother/child attachment for some time (perhaps forever). It can also be argued that the quality of neonatal bonding can affect the psychological wellbeing of the child.

What was your experience within the first few hours of birthing your child? Were you able to bond, and if so how? How is your attachment now, and how do you see their psychological ...

Last weekend DH was away and I decided to see if I could encourage AJ to night wean. My reason, apart from the never-ending "I want more sleep!!!!", was the nipple trauma which is a result of his abnormal suck pattern & extended comfort sucking. I knew he was ready, and has been for quite a while. I have been using the Elizabeth Pantley Pull-Off to try to get him to sleep without a nipple in his mouth for months; he had started going to sleep without it most of the time, his ...

Why is attachment vital to children?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"During the earliest years of our lives, indeed, emotional expression and its reception are the only means of communication we have, so that the foundations of our working models of self and attachment figure are perforce laid using information from that source alone."

I attended a group for parents today on the topic "Attachment Parenting in the 21st Century".

Whilst I feel that labels are limiting to extent, I do identify with following an "Attachment Parenting" philosophy. With Bodhi, those kind of practices- co sleeping, breastfeeding, wearing him in a sling, non violent communication and such- have been what feels instinctually right for me and my family.

However, after much thought provoking discussion I realised that perhaps ...

I hope you dont mind me contacting you. I'm hoping you will take part in some research I am undertaking looking at postnatal depression and post traumatic stess disorder following childbirth.

I am conducting the research study at Sussex University with the help of Dr Susan Ayers who is a very experienced researcher in the area of Birth Trauma and postnatal psychological distess in this country. The current research investigates women's general memory, their memories of childbirth, ...

Milky Vibes Needed!

Hi all,

With the rather stressful week I've just had, my supply is a little low. I'm also having a bit of trouble expressing (as in, I get 10ml tops per expressing session) which really worries me as I will probably start my job in the next week or two. I know worrying about it isn't doing me any favours, but I really, really don't want to comp with formula.

So milky vibes needed! Plus any advice you think may help will really be appreciated.
