This article briefly covers some of the mental health issues that can arise after a traumatic birth.

I do question the statistics at the end of the article regarding PTSD, my research has led me to believe they are significantly higher, but I also think that perhaps many women go undiagnosed and this could be a factor in the discrepancy.

The real fight in the Maternity Services Review is now- letters to government, activism etc- if you don't want to see the recommendations making homebirth even more difficult to have.

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists WA spokeswoman Louise Farrell said caesareans were mainly performed under 39 weeks because 10 per cent of women who waited until full term went into labour and had to have unscheduled operations, which caused staffing and organisational problems in hospitals.

I found this article interesting. To me, it shows how our wider lifestyle- things we don't associate with the ability to birth (or at least, things that are conducive to our health during pregnancy, which can have flow on effects) can effect the birthing process.

What do you think?

Sarah J Buckley has also written a great article on this topic, for those of you wishing to do more research on delayed cord clamping.

Was cord clamping something that you made a particular decision about before birthing? Did it turn out as per your wishes?

Ultrasound and Fury: One Mother's Ordeal

And had I noticed, I almost surely would have been alarmed. I was 20 weeks pregnant with my first child and had just had a "routine" ultrasound examination.
Is anyone familiar with the work of Catherine Hamlin? She founded and has been running a hospital in Ethiopia for women with birth injuries, mainly fistula for the last 50 years. She sounds to be a really dedicated, commited soul.

She has recently opened a midwifery school to prevent these injuries happening in the first place, for the five per cent of women (as quoted by her) who will need assistance due to complications in birth.

Here's an article:

Are you following this horrific story in the news at the moment? Despite hundreds of complaints no action was taken against this surgeon until a consumer group took it on. It's not strictly birth trauma but it happened in a system where it's only a short step from birthrape to mutilation with the collusion of the theatre staff, recovery staff and ward staff, none of whom spoke up.

I'm disgusted to the core but not shocked. This is what the system does to us.

"Being raped" is how Liz Darke describes giving birth to her daughter. "I had no control," she says, "over what people were doing to my body, despite being fully alert and explaining again and again the kind of treatment that I did and didn't want.
