apparently a hospital birth makes enough rubbish to fill a skip bin
That is really alarming! It's also another reason to choose homebirth

I think too it's indicative of just how much our culture is 'disposable'. Sure hygiene is an issue for some of these things, but it really shows an alarming gap between sustainability and convenience.
It irks me too, as all of the stuff is counted as rubbish and thrown away- undervaluing the birth process if you know what I mean? I'm having trouble verbalising that thought. Hmmm. Will come back when have more clarity of mind.

Re: sustainable living and hospital birth
Having been a dental nurse who scrubbed everything twice before it was autoclaved, and then rinsed it afterwards ... the disposable nature of things in birth is scary! Especially when I drink coffe and order something for the kids out and everything used in disposable
. I've been frequenting places that do NON-disposable crockery lately for this very reason. I HATE to think how much landfill I've created simply by giving birth three times in a hospital
